* Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant Odour Surveys

The Odour Unit odour sampling and testing team has carried out many odour emission surveys at Municipal WWTPs, including the following major plants:

  • Cronulla WWTP (2002) for Sydney Water;
  • Luggage Point WWTP (2002) for Brisbane Water;
  • Subiaco WWTP (2000) for Water Corporation WA;
  • Beenyup WWTP (1999) for Water Corporation WA;
  • Liverpool WWTP (1997) for Sydney Water; and
  • Quakers Hill WWTP (1997) for Sydney Water.
  • Bolivar WWTP (2001) for United Water.
At each WWTP point and area sources of odour were sampled, and odour emission rates quantified. TOU has the capability to use both flux hood and wind tunnel hood methods for sampling area sources. It has an extensive odour emission rate database for WWTP sources, against which new data can be routinely compared. This database is based upon more than 500 WWTP odour samples.

For the most recent odour survey carried out at the Cronulla plant in Sydney, both types of sampling flux hood were used at each area source. A comparison of the Specific Odour Emission Rate data showed a non-linear and poor correlation between the two methods. All sampling involved the use of 'system blank' sampling, to check for contamination of sampling equipment.
