| TESTING
All testing is carried out to the Australian Standard 'The Determination of Odour Concentration by
Dynamic Olfactometry, (AS/NZS 4323.3:2001)'. Terry Schulz, Principal of The Odour Unit, is well known as
an advocate of high quality olfactometry testing, having introduced the Dutch method of olfactometry (NVN 2820)
into Australia in 1991. That method, and the European CEN method which evolved from it, were precursors to the
Australian Standard method.
Key features of the use of AS/NZS 4323.3:2001 by TOU include -
6 person panels and 3 rounds of testing for each sample |
n-butanol referencing of all testing sessions |
Calibrated and trained professional odour assessors and |
Regular instrumental calibration for dilution accuracy and stability |
We currently have four fully computerised OdormatTM dynamic olfactometers,
each with a dilution range of 4 to 262,000 to one, with better than 10% dilution accuracy. The use of mass flow controllers
in these machines ensures maximum reliability and dilution accuracy and minimal risk of contamination.
One complete odour laboratory, comprising olfactometer and ancillary equipment, has been designed as a fully
mobile facility, able to relocate to meet clients' local needs. This is particularly important where odour
degradation effects are known to occur.
